内藤濯の訳による岩波少年文庫の「星の王子さま」はもう何度読み返したんだか覚えていない。最初に手にした時、オープニングの帽子?の絵(デグジュベリ本人の手によるもの)は強烈な印象を残し、「ああ、もう自分は純真無垢な子供の心を失っちまったんだ… 汚れつちまつた悲しみだ…」と嘆いたもんです。体面を取り繕うあまり矛盾だらけになってしまう王様や、好きなんだけど素直になれない恋人の様な一輪のバラの花、キツネとの友情など、こういう事あるよなぁと感じ入ってしまう。 (1943年発刊)

名シーンを少しばかり。

● 友だちのキツネとの別れの場面。キツネが王子さまに語る。「大切なものは目に見えないんだよ」

AND HE WENT BACK TO THE FOX: “Farewell,” he said. “Farewell,” said the fox. “Here’s my secret. It is very simple: One can see clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye.” “What is essential is invisible to the eye,” repeated the little prince so as to not forget.

● 僕のバラは他の人から見れば、君たち(他のバラ)と同じだろう。でもあのバラだけが、彼女だけが、僕にとって君たち全部よりもたいせつなんだ。

“You’re beautiful but you’re empty,” he added. “One cannot die for you. Of course, to an ordinary passerby, my rose would look just like you. But she, alone, is more important than all of you, because it is she that I have watered. Because she’s the one I put under glass, because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen. Because she is for whom I killed the caterpillars (except the two or three saved and left to become butterflies). Because it is she that I listened to complain, and boast, and even sometimes remain silent. Because she is my rose.”

それにしても直訳の「小さな王子さま」よりも「星の王子さま」のタイトルの方がしっくりくるのは内藤訳が素晴らしいためか、単に最初に出会った版のためか。仕事に疲れて気持ちがささくれている時にページをめくる。目ウロコ本、認定の一冊!
