「オススメ本を敢えて一冊に絞るとすれば?」と誰かに尋ねられたら、散々迷うでしょうが間違いなくトップテンのラインアップに入れると思う本があります。それは「赤毛のアン」(95冊目に感想)と、この「ファインマンさん」です。この二冊に出会ったのは社会人になってまもなくの頃でした。あまりにも気に入ってしまい、原文で読みたいと思ったのが洋書を読み始めるきっかけになりました。そしてこの「ファインマンさん」を読んだ時に「ああ、もっとこの本と早く出会いたかったなあ。学校時代にアレだけ毛嫌いしていた科学や数学をもっと違って角度で見ていただろうし、もしかして科学者を目指していたりして…」と遠い目になったもんです…
世間の常識に対しても科学者としての健全な懐疑心を持って本質を見極めようとする潔癖さを持ちつつも、いつまでも少年のような「面白がりでイチビリ」なところも失わなかったファインマンさん。 1965年にノーベル物理学賞を受賞した後もその奔放な生き方は変わりません。イタズラありユーモアあり、そしてちょっと女の子に弱いという逸話満載のこの本は、「好奇心」と「科学する心」に対する憧れと尊敬の念をぼくに与えてくれました。ぼくのその後の読書の嗜好にもきっと影響が出ていると思います。(1985年発刊)

メモポイント (ネタバレあり)

● 恋人アーリーンがファインマンさんに常にかけていた言葉。彼の自由で本質を見ようとする性質は彼女からの影響が大きかった。(この彼女の言葉はのちに出版される作品のタイトルにもなった。邦題は「困ります、ファインマンさん」こちらも面白い! 以下はこの続編に書かれたエピソードです。)

若き恋人アーリーンは病に冒されていた。彼女の命が長くない事を知りながらも、周りの反対を押し切って彼はアーリーンと結婚。しかし残念ながら彼女は程なく早逝してしまう。最期まで献身的に支えた続けたファインマンさん。一人になってからは放心状態になり涙も出なかった。しばらくしたある日、街を歩いていた彼はショーウィンドウに飾られていたあるワンピースを見かける。
「ああ、アーリーンが好きそうな服だな」
思った途端、初めて涙が溢れ出して止まらなかった。このくだりには読んでいて思わず涙が。

● 周りが自分に対してどう考えていようとそんな事は関係ない。自分を偽らないで。期待通りにならなくてもそれは相手が悪い。ぼくの落ち度じゃない。

You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish. I have no responsibility to be like they expect me to be. It's their mistake, not my failing.

● 自分を欺いて中途半端に納得してしまう事。これはいけない。自分自身が一番騙しやすいものだ。

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself—and you are the easiest person to fool. So you have to be very careful about that.

● 趣味で「金庫破り」を覚えるなど、みんなを驚かせることが好きだったファインマンさん。人に自分のことを天才だと思わせるイタズラもやってました。

I wouldn’t stop until I figured the damn thing out–it would take me fifteen or twenty minutes. But during the day, other guys would come to me with the same problem, and I’d do it for them in a flash. So for one guy, to do it took me twenty minutes, while there were five guys who thought I was a super-genius.

● 印象深いエセ科学の話。カーゴカルトサイエンスと名付けている。ウワベの形だけ真似ても意味なし。どこかの図書館で話題になった洋書ハリボテの飾りのようだ。

I think the educational and psychological studies I mentioned are examples of what I would like to call cargo cult science.
In the South Seas there is a cargo cult of people. During the war they saw airplanes land with lots of good materials, and they want the same thing to happen now. So they’ve arranged to make things like runways, to put fires along the sides of the runways, to make a wooden hut for a man to sit in, with two wooden pieces on his head like headphones and bars of bamboo sticking out like antennas—he’s the controller—and they wait for the airplanes to land. They’re doing everything right. The form is perfect. It looks exactly the way it looked before. But it doesn’t work. No airplanes land. So I call these things cargo cult science, because they follow all the apparent precepts and forms of scientific investigation, but they’re missing something essential, because the planes don’t land.

ボンゴ奏者になったり絵を描いたりと、面白い逸話があり過ぎて、とても全部は紹介しきれません。読後感は爽やかで本当にオススメです。できれば出会うのであれば若いうちがいい。そんな風に思わせてくれる大好きな一冊です。

ちなみに、ぼくはミルクとレモン、混ぜても結構イケますけどね。
