ミナお嬢様と勇敢なる冒険者たちの物語。

はじめに抱いていたイメージとは違ってました。古典っぽくて読みにくいのかなと思っていたら、全然。100年以上も昔の話なんですが、単語も分かりやすいですよ。土地の古老が話す訛りの強いdialectsを除けば今でも違和感なくスッと読めます。

「Frankenstein」(93冊目)を読んだ時も感じましたが、日本の古文と比べて、英文のクラッシックが広く読まれている理由のひとつに、言葉の変化があまり激しくないという要素があるんじゃないかと思います。小説というよりも、手紙や電報、日記をつなぎ合わせるという形式で物語が構成されています。カメラ(コダックという商品名で登場)や蓄音機での音声日記の記述など、当時では最新式だったであろうガジェットも出てきます。作者のブラム・ストーカーは当時としては斬新な手法にチャレンジしていたのではないでしょうか。

メモ (ちょっとネタバレ)
● これで後世に伝わる典型的なドラキュラ伯爵のビジュアルイメージが出来上がったんでしょう。

His face was a strong, a very strong, aquiline, with high bridge of the thin nose and peculiarly arched nostrils, with lofty domed forehead, and hair growing scantily round the temples but profusely elsewhere. His eyebrows were very massive, almost meeting over the nose, and with bushy hair that seemed to curl in its own profusion.
The mouth, so far as I could see it under the heavy moustache, was fixed and rather cruel-looking, with peculiarly sharp white teeth.

● で、ヒロインのミナが可憐、可愛いのです。なおかつ頭も良い。吸血鬼ハンターの男たちに励ましと希望を与えるキャラクター。なんだか男が描いた理想の脳内女性像っぽいです。ちょっと宮崎駿カントク系?

We women have something of the mother in us that makes us rise above smaller matters when the mother spirit is invoked. I felt this big sorrowing man's head resting on me, as though it were that of a baby that some day may lie on my bosom, and I stroked his hair as though he were my own child.

詳しく書くとネタバレになりますが、形成不利となり姿をくらましたドラキュラ伯爵の居場所を何人もの男たちがかかってもさっぱり分からない時に、ホームズ顔負けのロジカルな名推理でミナ嬢が突き止めるシーンは圧巻です。

● 伯爵に血を吸われて (また伯爵の血を飲まされて) 吸血鬼になってしまった少女ルーシー。彼女を懸命に助けようとするヘルシング教授。彼は自らの危険を顧みず渾身的につくす医者の鑑なのですが、唐突に出てくる教授のヒステリー症状には面食らいます。少女の死に立ち会ったのちに発作的に笑いが止まらなくなってしまう。これって本作のストーリー構成として必要なんでしょうかね？実話ドキュメンタリーならあり得ると思いますが、あまり小説の要素としてはそぐわない気がしてなりません。

Arthur and Quincey went away together to the station, and Van Helsing and I came on here. The moment we were alone in the carriage he gave way to a regular fit of hysterics. He has denied to me since that it was hysterics, and insisted that it was only his sense of humor asserting itself under very terrible conditions. He laughed till he cried, and I had to draw down the blinds lest any one should see us and misjudge. And then he cried, till he laughed again, and laughed and cried together, just as a woman does.

● ルーシーは伯爵の毒牙にかかり死後に吸血鬼となったが、最後は首を切られて退治された。そして親友のルーシーと同様にミナにも自身の血を飲ませて吸血鬼にさせようとしていた伯爵。ミナは徐々に自身が伯爵の穢れた血で吸血鬼に同化して行くことを自覚していました。そして、ついに最愛の夫に懇願するミナ。
「お願い、誓って。私が自分で無くなってしまったら、そしてルーシーの様に吸血鬼になってしまいそうになったら、迷わずあなたの手で私を殺して欲しいの」

"Then I shall tell you plainly what I want, for there must be no doubtful matter in this connection between us now. You must promise me, one and all, even you, my beloved husband, that should the time come, you will kill me."

● 伯爵の穢れた血の洗礼を受けたミナは、伯爵に操られてしまったものの、実はミナも伯爵の心が読めるようになっていました。これってハリー・ポッターがヴォルテモートから受けた傷が元で、ヴォルテモートの心が読めるようになったのと似ていますね。

He think, too, that as he cut himself off from knowing your mind, there can be no knowledge of him to you. There is where he fail! That terrible baptism of blood which he give you makes you free to go to him in spirit, as you have as yet done in your times of freedom, when the sun rise and set.

果たして男たちはヒロインのミナが完全に吸血鬼になってしまう前に、彼女を助けることができるのか！現代のミステリー&ファンタジー小説みたいで、想像していたよりも結構面白かったですよ。
