ふー、やっと読み終えました。美文調で古語もふんだんに使われており、かなり読みづらかったです。ハーバード大学卒の意識高い若者が「持たない生活」を志向し元祖ミニマリストとして、ウォールデン湖のほとりで、二年間の「森の生活」をおくった際のエッセイ。(1854年発刊)

日々の暮らし振りはけっこう詳細に書き込まれています。ローラ・インガルス・ワイルダーを思い出しました。いや「下ノ畑ニ居リマス」の宮沢賢治か。

後半は池の周りに棲息する動植物についての観察がファーブル昆虫記やシートン動物記並みに細かく記されています。そして、これらの英語名称がサッパリ分かりません。辞書で引いても記憶しておくのも難しく… おおよその雰囲気で飛ばし読みしてました。
シツコイですが、それにしても読みにくい。専門単語以外は一見すると難しくなさそうなんですが、読んでいて意味がよく分かりません。古今東西の古典の引用もふんだんに使われています。ちょっと衒学趣味でナルシスト風なのが鼻につきましたが、それでも自身のプリンシプルに正直な人なのでしょう。僕の買ったkindleには「On The Duty of Civil Disobedience」というエッセイも収録されていますが、当時のアメリカ政府の政策(奴隷制やメキシコ戦争の対応など)に反対して税金を払うのを拒否して投獄されたときの顛末も記されています。

Practically, the old have no very important advice to give the young, their own experience has been so partial, and their lives have been such miserable failures, for private reasons, as they must believe; and it may be that they have some faith left which belies that experience, and they are only less young than they were. I have lived some thirty years on this planet, and I have yet to hear the first syllable of valuable or even earnest advice from my seniors.

● どんだけ一人が好きやねん！旅路では、妙に孤独でそして切ない感じがこみ上げる。この感覚、けっこう好きです。

I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will. Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows.

I do not say that John or Jonathan will realize all this; but such is the character of that morrow which mere lapse of time can never make to dawn. The light which puts out our eyes is darkness to us. Only that day dawns to which we are awake. There is more day to dawn. The sun is but a morning star.

英文読解力が上がれば、もっとスムースに読み終えていたと思います。原仙の英文標準問題精構をやり直そうかな。
