シューズ、スポーツウェアの雄、ナイキの創業者であるフィル・ナイトの自伝です。 はじめはビジネス書の類かな、と思って手にしてみましたが、これがなんとまあ面白いこと。 熱いハートの青春譚。 椎名誠の克美荘か、はたまた小田実の「何でも見てやろう」、または浮谷東次郎「俺様の宝石さ」のよう。 虚飾を嫌い自分に正直に走り続けてきた著者の文章は、華美な修飾語が多くなくて良いですね。読みやすいです。
著者であるフィル・ナイトは大学を卒業後、世界放浪の旅に出ます。 途中で立ち寄った日本の神戸で、自身が陸上選手の時代から大ファンだったランニングシューズ・オニツカタイガーのメーカー、オニツカを訪れます(後のアシックス)。 タイガー愛を熱く語るフィルの思いに触れた鬼塚社長。 まだ学校を出たばかりでビジネスの経験のないこの若者を信じて、社長は彼の希望するアメリカでの販売代理店の契約を結ぶことに同意します。 そしてやっと念願のオニツカの代理店ブルーリボン社を設立。ビジネスは開いたもののそこからが大変。 自転車操業の始まりで会社は資金繰りに苦しみながらも、一人一人、共に夢に向かって走ってくれる仲間を見つけていきます。また生涯の伴侶となる女性にも出会ったのもこの頃でした。 家庭を持ったフィルでしたが、まだ自身の稼ぎも十分ではなく、会計士として4大会計事務所一つ、プライスウォーターハウスで働きながら、オニツカタイガーの認知度を上げることに全力を注ぎます。 そんな中、裏工作でアメリカでの販売代理店を変えようとするオニツカ側の裏切りに合い(この辺りはオニツカ側にも言い分があるかと思いますが)、突然、両社の蜜月関係が終わりビジネスが決裂。 独自で生きる道を探さなくてはならなくなりました。 その後も度重なる混乱を経て、タキシード仮面のように現れた日商岩井(後の双日)や他の仲間たちの助けを受け、フィルは自社ブランド「ナイキ」(勝利の女神ニケから命名)を立ち上げます。ここの辺りの展開が小説のようでかなり面白い。引き込まれました。

Now he took the seat at the head of the table and Morimoto tried to summarize my reason for being there. Mr. Onitsuka raised a hand, cut him off.
Without preamble he launched into a long, passionate monologue. Some time ago, he said, he’d had a vision. A wondrous glimpse of the future. “Everyone in the world wear athletic shoes all the time,” he said. “I know this day come.” He paused, looking around the table at each person, to see if they also knew. His gaze rested on me. He smiled. I smiled. He blinked twice. “You remind me of myself when I am young,” he said softly. He stared into my eyes. One second. Two. Now he turned his gaze to Morimoto. “This about those thirteen western states?” he said. “Yes,” Morimoto said. “Hm,” Onitsuka said. “Hmmmm.” He narrowed his eyes, looked down. He seemed to be meditating. Again he looked up at me. “Yes,” he said, “all right. You have western states.”
The Marlboro Man, he said, could continue selling his wrestling shoes nationwide, but would limit his track shoe sales to the East Coast.
Mr. Onitsuka would personally write to the Marlboro Man and inform him of this decision.
He rose. I rose. Everyone rose. We all bowed. He left the conference room.
Everyone remaining in the conference room exhaled. “So… it is decided,” Morimoto said.
・ブルーリボン社の稼ぎだけでは暮らしていけないフィルは、大学の会計学講師の職を得た。そこで出会ったのが女子生徒ペニー。 一目惚れしたフィル。 会えない時間をもどかしく感じる。
「あなたがどれだけ相手を愛しているかを知るために、最も単純で分かりやすい方法とは何か。それはサヨナラを言う時だ。」美しい言葉。
The single easiest way to find out how you feel about someone. Say goodbye.
・言いたいことを言い合える。仲間っていいな。
We called each other terrible names. We rained down verbal blows. While floating ideas, and shooting down ideas, and hashing out threats to the company, the last thing we took into account was someone’s feelings. Including mine. Especially mine. My fellow Buttfaces, my employees, called me Bucky the Bookkeeper, constantly. I never asked them to stop.
・人に任せる、ということ
Clearly the Buttfaces liked the culture I’d created. I trusted them, wholly, and didn’t look over their shoulders, and that bred a powerful two-way loyalty. My management style wouldn’t have worked for people who wanted to be guided, every step, but this group found it liberating, empowering. I let them be, let them do, let them make their own mistakes, because that’s how I’d always liked people to treat me.
成功者が書く自伝には自らを大きく見せようとしがちですが、本書にはそう言った臭みが全くありません。圧倒的に面白かったですね。この自伝の最終章は、共に青春時代を過ごした仲間たちのその後についての振り返りで締めくくられています。 それは映画「アメリカン・グラフィティ」や「スタンド・バイ・ミー」のようで少し切ない余韻を残します。
