「GRIT」とは「歯を食いしばって頑張る」という意味だそうですね。すべての活動は究極のゴールのための中間目標ととらえて、限られたリソースを本当にやりたい事に集中させるという方法論の効果を心理学者である著者は説いています。これってGreg Mackeownの「Essentialism 」(21冊目に感想)に通じる内容みたい。(2016年発刊)

著者は戦略コンサルのマッキンゼー出身だそうです。このコンサルから学校教師の経験をを経て、現在は心理学者としてのキャリアを確立されています。著者いわく、そもそもこの本を書くキッカケとなったのは、学校教師時代に気がついたというIQの高低と学業成績が想定ほどに相関関係にないという点でした。それではより相関がある特質は何か？著者が見つけたものがGRIT、つまり「やり抜く」力、粘り強さだったとの事です。
繰り返しが多く少し冗長な気もしましたが、この傾向は他の科学系読み物にもよくあるように思います。知っている事をすべて盛り込みたいとの想いがあるからでしょうか。
別の人(リンダ・キャプラン)が同名の本を出版されていますが、そちらは未読です。

メモポイント

● 将棋の羽生さんも言ってました。
「何かに挑戦したら確実に報われるのであれば、誰でも必ず挑戦するだろう。報われないかもしれないところで、同じ情熱、気力、モチベーションをもって継続してやるのは非常に大変なことであり、私は、それこそが才能だと思っている」(羽生善治「決断力」)

Apparently, it was critically important—and not at all easy—to keep going after failure: “Some people are great when things are going well, but they fall apart when things aren’t.”

● 進化論のダーウィンは、本人も認めるスローラーンナーでした。彼の業績は、コツコツ積み重ねるタイプのGrit にて成し遂げられたのだと。

On the whole, Darwin’s biographers don’t claim he possessed supernatural intelligence. He was certainly intelligent, but insights didn’t come to him in lightning flashes. He was, in a sense, a plodder. Darwin’s own autobiography corroborates this view: “I have no great quickness of apprehension [that] is so remarkable in some clever men,” he admits.

● ニーチェの言葉。「あいつは天才だからね。そう言ってしまえばそりゃ楽だろう。天賦の才があると言ってしまえば、相手は神さまのようなモンだから自分と比べなくて済んじまうからな」

“Our vanity, our self-love, promotes the cult of the genius,” Nietzsche said. “For if we think of genius as something magical, we are not obliged to compare ourselves and find ourselves lacking. … To call someone ‘divine’ means: ‘here there is no need to compete.’ ”

立川談春「赤めだか」を思い出しました。談志が談春に諭した「お前に嫉妬とは何かを教えてやる…」の逸話。

● 著者の唱える「成果」の公式。
才能 × 2 (努力) = スキル
スキル × 努力 = 成果
「スキル」を身につけるには才能が貢献するのは間違いない。が、それにレバレッジをかけるのは「努力」の要素だ。そしてそのスキルを成果に結びつけるのも「努力」だと著者は説く。

What this theory says is that when you consider individuals in identical circumstances, what each achieves depends on just two things, talent and effort. Talent—how fast we improve in skill—absolutely matters. But effort factors into the calculations twice, not once. Effort builds skill. At the very same time, effort makes skill productive.

● genius の定義とは。

If you define genius as being able to accomplish great things in life without effort, then he was right: I’m no genius, and neither is he. But if, instead, you define genius as working toward excellence, ceaselessly, with every element of your being—then, in fact, my dad is a genius, and so am I, and so is Coates, and, if you’re willing, so are you.

示唆に富む内容です。データの検証という点から見て、「やり抜く力」という概念と効果の因果関係を科学的に証明するのは、少し精神論に偏っていると取られがちで難しいだろうなと感じました。が、やるせなさを堪えて努力を積み重ねている多くのチャレンジャーにとって、本書は福音の書といえるでしょう。

「すべてのボクのようなロクデナシのために」、この本はオススメです。
