「ビジネスの上で、利益を上げるにはどのようなパターンがあるのでしょう？」

業績不振の工業部品メーカーに勤める若手ビジネスマンSteve。経営の神様のような中国系のおじいちゃんコンサルタントZhaoからのアドバイスを受けつつ学び成長していくというストーリー。 (このおじいちゃん、ぼくの脳内イメージでは映画「ベストキッド」に出てくるミヤギ老人に変換されてます)

なぜかアメリカのビジネス本はこの手の小説仕立てが多いようですね。「The Goal」や「Leadership and Self-deception」(67冊目に感想)とか。本作、難しい修飾語などは使われておらず、英語の文章はかなり読みやすい部類でしょう。ただ、かなり芝居掛かっただ言い回しが多い割には当たり前のことが書かれており、あまり大したこと言ってないような気がしました。邦訳のレビューを見ると、評価が高いようですが、残念ながら自分にはこの本の素晴らしさに気づくことができなかったようです。ただこのおじいちゃんコンサルが、主人公にいくつかの課題図書をオススメしているのですが、こちらは参考文献として役に立ちそうな気がします。「孫子(The Art of War)」(15冊目に感想)も紹介されていましたが、タイトルの「The Art of Profitability 」の由来でしょうかね。

● 過去にやってきたことはそれなりの理由がある。そこを考えないで、なんでも新しいことに価値があると考えるのは早計である。

● ビジネスマンにとっておおよそのサイズ感を持っておくことが大事。大間違いを防ぐために、正確な数字は必要ない。確かに、経営者やFP&A担当者にはこのポイントは大きい。

● 広告は継続的に行うことこそ、最も効果があるらしい。累積的効果。
そして、自身を一つのブランドにしてしまう、これが効率的。

小説仕立ての話としては、前述した「The Goal」(188冊目に感想)の方が、夫婦の危機を乗り越えるエピソードも盛り込まれてハラハラドキドキでもっと面白く感じました。こちらは文句なしのオススメ!
