この本によって「Singularity- シンギュラリティ」(技術的特異点)という言葉が一般に認知されるようになったと思います。 「特異点」とは元々は数学や物理学から拝借した言葉だそうで、例えば物理学で言えば、宇宙に存在するブラックホールの事象の地平線において、重力場が無限大になる(計量が無限大に発散する)ポイントが「gravitational singularity (重力の特異点)」とのこと。(本書内で説明が書かれていましたが、読んでもよく分かりませんでした…)
この特異点を境に無限大に広がる、というコンセプトに着目した著者のKurzwell は、技術の発展によりコンピュータ(AI)が進化を続け、近い将来のある一点の時期(シンギュラリティ)を境に、想像もつかないほどの爆発的進化を遂げると予想し、その臨界点を超える瞬間を「技術的特異点」と呼びました。 それは「100兆の極端に遅い結合（シナプス）しかない人間の脳の限界を、人間と機械が統合された文明によって超越する」瞬間であると説明しています。
最近は、Chat GPTの登場とともに、この本の人気が再燃し話題となる機会も増えたように思います。 読んでみて分かりましたが、本作はAIが人間を駆逐するといった単純かつセンセーショナルなものではなく、将来の科学、テクノロジー全般の予想(もちろんリスクについても触れています)の記述も多く興味深い内容でした。 少し専門的な言葉も多く、私にはちょっと難し過ぎましたが。

What, then, is the Singularity? It’s a future period during which the pace of technological change will be so rapid, its impact so deep, that human life will be irreversibly transformed. Although neither utopian nor dystopian, this epoch will transform the concepts that we rely on to give meaning to our lives, from our business models to the cycle of human life, including death itself. Understanding the Singularity will alter our perspective on the significance of our past and the ramifications for our future. To truly understand it inherently changes one’s view of life in general and one’s own particular life.

The key idea underlying the impending Singularity is that the pace of change of our human-created technology is accelerating and its powers are expanding at an exponential pace.

From my perspective, the Singularity has many faces. It represents the nearly vertical phase of exponential growth that occurs when the rate is so extreme that technology appears to be expanding at infinite speed. Of course, from a mathematical perspective, there is no discontinuity, no rupture, and the growth rates remain finite, although extraordinarily large. But from our currently limited framework, this imminent event appears to be an acute and abrupt break in the continuity of progress. I emphasize the word “currently” because one of the salient implications of the Singularity will be a change in the nature of our ability to understand. We will become vastly smarter as we merge with our technology.

Indeed, but the overriding, impersonal forces of the law of accelerating returns are nonetheless moving in the right direction. Consider that technology in a particular area starts out unaffordable and not working very well. Then it becomes merely expensive and works a little better. The next step is the product becomes inexpensive and works really well. Finally, the technology becomes virtually free and works great. It wasn’t long ago that when you saw someone using a portable phone in a movie, he or she was a member of the power elite, because only the wealthy could afford portable phones. Or as a more poignant example, consider drugs for AIDS. They started out not working very well and costing more than ten thousand dollars per year per patient. Now they work a lot better and are down to several hundred dollars per year in poor countries. Unfortunately with regard to AIDS, we’re not yet at the working great and costing almost nothing stage. The world is beginning to take somewhat more effective action on AIDS, but it has been tragic that more has not been done. Millions of lives, most in Africa, have been lost as a result. But the effect of the law of accelerating returns is nonetheless moving in the right direction. And the time gap between leading and lagging edge is itself contracting. Right now I estimate this lag at about a decade. In a decade, it will be down to about half a decade.

So, we find our use of the term “Singularity” in this book to be no less appropriate than the deployment of this term by the physics community. Just as we find it hard to see beyond the event horizon of a black hole, we also find it difficult to see beyond the event horizon of the historical Singularity. How can we, with our brains each limited to 1016 to 1019 cps, imagine what our future civilization in 2099 with its 1060 cps will be capable of thinking and doing?
著者の考えでは、Singularity においては技術が人間的な精巧さと柔軟さに追いつき大幅に抜き去るのですが、それと同時に人間自身もバージョンアップされて、人間と技術との境界線が曖昧になると考えています。 それはsingularity として一般に言われているような人類と技術が敵対関係にあるのではなく、融合に近いイメージなのでしょう。
この曖昧な境界線の延長線上には、人間の精神(脳の働き)を、テクノロジー上に移して永遠の生命を得るところまでも予想しています。 (ジョニー・デップの映画「トランセンデンス」でも、この題材を扱っていました)
人工知能に関する感想は、“Automated us” (アルゴリズムが世界を支配する - 39冊目)や、”Our Final Invention (241冊目)でも少し書きましたが、これらの本の原点となる基本書が本作であると思います。
