Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (J.K. Rowling) - 「ハリーポッターと賢者の石」- 202冊目

少し前の話ですが、AIにハリー・ポッターシリーズを読み込ませて、J.K.ローリングの筆致を真似した短いお話を作らせたというニュースが話題になりました。その名も「Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash (ハリー・ポッターと山盛りの灰のように見えるものの肖像)」なんか、ありえんタイトルです。
そのストーリーも無茶苦茶で、ロンがハーマイオニーの家族を食べたり、ハリーが自分の目をえぐり出して森に投げつけたり…ほとんどホラー小説ですね。ローリングの作品をこのAIに大量に記憶させて使用頻度の高い文章パターンを組み合わせ、予測変換させて導き出したそうです。で、その英文を少し読んでみたんですが、たしかにシュールな内容ではありましたが文章自体は意外にこなれた英文に見えましたよ。興味ある方は「AI、ハリー・ポッター」でググッてみて下さい。

さて、今日は超有名作品「Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石)」の抜書メモです。(US版では賢者の部分がPhilosopherではなくSorcererと改題されています。フイロソファーだと「哲学者」のようなイメージになってしまうからでしょうかね。)

読んだのは随分と前のことで、子供たちが小さい頃には映画も観に行きました。DVDも持ってます。今よりももっと読解力が低かった頃にこの本を手にしたのですが、始めからワクワクしっぱなしで、一気に読み通したことを覚えています。同じファンタジー物でも最近読んだTolkienの「The Hobitt」(191冊目)は単調に感じてしまって読み進めるのがちょっとシンドかったのですが、ハリー・ポッターはストーリーがとにかく面白い。心に残る名シーンがてんこ盛りです。特にダンブルドア校長のセリフには魅せられます。

● ホグワーツにて。満面の笑みで新入生を歓迎するダンブルドア校長。楽しい宴の前に校長からの訓話があります。
「ようこそ、ホグワーツへ。それでは宴の前に一言、二言、歓迎の言葉を述べさせて頂きたい。それは「一言、二言！」　以上、終わり!」
生徒たちの大拍手。

Albus Dumbledore had gotten to his feet. He was beaming at the students, his arms opened wide, as if nothing could have pleased him more than to see them all there.
"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"
"Thank you!"
He sat back down. Everybody clapped and cheered. Harry didn't know whether to laugh or not.
さすが、ダンブルドア！　こんな時に長話は無用。少年少女たちの気持ちをよーく分かってらっしゃる。

● ハリーのクラス分けシーン。
「スリザリンは嫌、スリザリンは嫌」
「うん、スリザリンは嫌か? せっかく偉大に慣れる素質があるというのに…そうじゃな…それではむしろ、グリフィンドール!!」 ”組み分け帽”が高々と叫ぶ。

“Hmm,” said a small voice in his ear. “Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind either. There’s talent, oh my goodness, yes — and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that’s interesting. . . . So where shall I put you?”
Harry gripped the edges of the stool and thought, Not Slytherin, not Slytherin.
“Not Slytherin, eh?” said the small voice. “Are you sure? You could be great, you know, it’s all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that — no? Well, if you’re sure — better be GRYFFINDOR!”

● 「ヴォルデモートと呼びなさい、ハリー。　ものを呼ぶには適切な名前を使うことを心がけるんだよ。　名前を恐れているとそのもの自身に対する恐れも大きくなるからね。」とダンブルドア。

Call him Voldemort, Harry. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.’

始めに言葉ありき。言葉が思考を定義する。

● 「Mirror of Erised」の切ないシーン。それは真実では無かったとしても見る者が望んだ通りの姿を映し出してくれる魔法の鏡。ハリーが鏡の中に見たものとは、幼い頃に亡くなった両親がハリーを愛情込めて抱いている姿だった。しかし、その鏡は見る者に知識も真実も伝えるものではない。心の隙間にある「こうありたい」との欲望をそのままに映し出すただの幻影。麻薬のように人の心を蝕んでいく。
(Erised はdesireの逆さ文字。翻訳では「のぞみ」を逆さにして「みぞの」鏡となっていました)

“Can you think what the Mirror of Erised shows us all?" Harry shook his head.
"Let me explain. The happiest man on earth would be able to use the Mirror of Erised like a normal mirror, that is, he would look into it and see himself exactly as he is. Does that help."
Harry thought. Then he said slowly, "It shows us what we want... whatever we want..."
"Yes and no," said Dumbledore quietly.
"It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts. You, who have never known your family, see them standing around you. Ronald Weasley, who has always been overshadowed by his brothers, sees himself standing alone, the best of all of them. However, this mirror will give us neither knowledge or truth. Men have wasted away before it, entranced by what they have seen, or been driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible.

● ハリー、ロン、ハーマイオニーは、ホグワーツ教授陣が賢者の石を守るために巡らせた鉄壁の魔法の守りに立ち向かう。圧巻なのはその守りの一つ、生身の身体で闘う巨大チェスのシーン。相手のキングをチェックメイトしないとそこから先には進めない。ここでチェスが得意なロンが活躍、男気を見せる。自分を犠牲にしてでも、ホグワーツを救うためにハリーに先を急がせるロン。

「もう少しで終わるよ」急にロンが呟いた。
「ちょっと待って… えーっと」
クイーンが真っ白な顔をロンに向けた。
「うん、やっぱりそうだ…」ロンが穏やかに言った。「これしかない。ぼくが取られるしかないんだ。」
「駄目!!」とハリーとハーマイオニーが叫んだ。
「これがチェスなんだ!」とロンはぴしゃりと言った。「犠牲を払わなくちゃいけないんだ! ぼくがコマを進める。するとクイーンがぼくを取る。ハリー、そうすると君が自由に動けるようになるから、キングにチェックメイトをかけるんだ!」

‘We're nearly there,’ he muttered suddenly.
‘Let me think - let me think …’
The white queen turned her blank face towards him.
‘Yes …’ said Ron softly, ‘it's the only way … I've got to be taken.’
‘NO!’ Harry and Hermione shouted.
‘That's chess!’ snapped Ron.
‘You've got to make some sacrifices!
　I'll make my move and she'll take me - that leaves you free to checkmate the king, Harry!’

● ヴォルデモートとの闘いを終えたハリー。見舞いに来てくれたダンブルドア校長。
「どうしてクィレルは、ぼくに触れることができなかったんですか」
「君のお母さんは命をかけて君を守ったんだよ。もしヴォルデモートに理解できない事があるとすればそれは愛だ。その愛の印を君に残していくほど、お母さんの愛情が強いものだったことに彼は気づかなかったのだよ。」

“Your mother died to save you. If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. He didn't realise that love as powerful as your mother's for you leaves its own mark. Not a scar, no visible sign...to have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection for ever.’

● 最後のシーン。
「勇気にもいろいろある」と、微笑みながらダンブルドア。「敵に立ち向かうのには大変勇気がいる。しかし正しいと信じることのために、友に立ち向かうのにも同じくらい勇気がいるものだ。したがってネビル・ロングボトムに１０点を与えよう」

‘There are all kinds of courage,’ said Dumbledore, smiling.’ It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom.’

そしてダンブルドアと言えばコレ!
“Alas! Earwax!” 　なんと！　耳くそ味じゃ！！
