   以前、本作の舞台を日本に移し野村萬斎がポワロ役を演じたテレビドラマを見た。 それは結構、豪華なキャスティングで、今回原作を読んでいてもぼくの脳内ではそのドラマでの俳優たちが生き生きと演じていた。 
   古典ミステリーであり、現在ではそれほど驚きの 推理トリックとまでは言えないが当時としては斬新だっただろう。( 「アクロイド殺し」の結末といい、クリスティは先駆者ですね)
   オリエント急行のゆったりとした雰囲気が伝わるようで、「世界の車窓から」の映像を見ている様にゆっくりと味わって楽しめた。 また、登場人物も国際色豊かで、よくあるエスニックジョークを読んでいる様だ。 (1934年発刊)

メモポイント
●  ミス・メアリー・デブナムがすごくいい。この意志が強く頭の良い美人に対してのポワロの見立て
She was, he judged, the kind of young woman who could take care of herself with perfect ease wherever she went. She had poise and efficiency.

   オリエントエクスプレスでの旅行は憧れるねー。 次は007の「ロシアより愛をこめて」でも読もうかな？(映画での格闘シーンは圧巻!)

本作、英語もそれほど難しくなく、「灰色の脳細胞」を使って休日の午後に読む本としては結構なものですぞ、モナミ!

100冊目のキリ番はレイチェル・カーソンの「The Sense of Wonder 」

土曜日の早朝、木がいっぱい生い茂っている近くの公園をヨメさんとよく歩いている。 彼女は「自分の生徒たちに四季の自然について伝えるんだ」と、朝からiPhone を片手にパシャパシャといろんなものの写真を撮っている。 「ネットでも手に入るんじゃないの？」と言うと、「自分で撮るからこそ良いんじゃない。 人のだと意味ないの!」と言われてしまった。 臨場感が大事らしい。 で、一緒になって自然っぽいものを探すと結構面白い。 イガ栗の実や真っ赤な楓の葉っぱ、カミキリ虫やセミの脱け殻までバラエティーに富んでいる。 そうしてネタを物色しながら歩いていると、この『Sense of Wonder 』を思い出した。 センス・オブ・ワンダーとは自然とのふれあいで感じる不思議な感覚のことだそうだ。 ネットではなく実際に手で触れると、確かに四季をよく感じ取ることができる。

レイチェル・カーソンは『Silent Spring (沈黙の春)』(8冊目)でも紹介した海洋生物学者だ。 幼な子の甥のロジャーを毛布にくるみ、二人して自然散策した時のエッセイ。(母親を亡くしたロジャーはレイチェルの養子となった) この本はロジャーに捧げられたものだ。 紹介する版はキンドルじゃないんだけどオススメです。 何より写真が素晴らしい。写真集として愛でましょう。 (初出は1956年)

● 「もし子供たちの成長を見守る妖精に私が話しかける力があるのなら、世界中の子供たちに、生涯消えることのないセンス・オブ・ワンダー(自然の素晴らしさ・不思議さを楽しめる感性)を授けて上げて欲しいと頼むでしょう。」

● サン・テグジュベリに通じる感性派。 知識を得ることより感じることを大事にしたい。

この本を読むと、「ご冗談でしょう」の物理学者ファインマンさんが幼い頃にお父さんと森を散歩するシーンを思い出した。 科学者でもなんでもないお父さん(確か車のセールスマン→ 確認したら制服のセールスマンでした。)は 単に物の名前を知ってることとその物自体を知ることとはまったく違うということを幼いファインマン少年に伝えた。 このお父さんもセンス・オブ・ワンダーの持ち主か。 『Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!』もオススメの一冊。

72冊目で紹介したカーネマン「ファスト&スロー」に続く行動経済学シリーズ。 人間の判断の非合理性について書かれている。 特に人は生まれつき損を避けようとする性質がある、との特性についてページを割いている。

邦題はズバリ、「あなたはなぜ値札にダマされるのか?」
(2008年発刊)

メモポイント

● スイスの核燃料処理場のエピソード。「 みんなの為に役に立つなら」と処理場の建設を博愛精神で無償で受け入れるつもりだった住民。 さらに受け入れ同意者を増やそうとして、政府がお金を払うと言い出すと、同意者はとたんに減ってしまった。
博愛的中枢による判断 (altruism center) が快楽的中枢による判断(pleasure center)に置き換わってしまった例。 快楽中枢の方がより多くの報酬を必要とする。

It’s as if we have two “engines” running in our brains that can’t operate simultaneously. We can approach a task either altruistically or from a self-interested perspective. The two different engines run on different fuels and also need different amounts of those fuels to fire up. It doesn’t take much to fuel the altruism center: all you need is the sense that you’re helping someone or making a positive impact. But the pleasure center seems to need a lot more—2.5 cents per right answer or a 5,000-franc stipend for agreeing to tolerate a nuclear dump site just isn’t enough.

● 予測できない将来の出来事において、その選択肢にプラスとマイナスの可能性がある場合、人はマイナスの影響度を過剰に評価して、できるだけ避けようとするらしい。 単純な算数で考えれば、本来はメリットとリスクは同等のものなんだけど。

Our natural tendency to avoid the pain of loss is most likely to distort our thinking when we place too much importance on short-term goals. When we adopt the long view, on the other hand, immediate potential losses don’t seem as menacing.

● 人事評価を行うときのかなめ。 やっぱり、能動的に参加している感じが大事なんだなー。

Researcher Jack Greenberg studied how employees from these different sectors perceived their performance evaluations. He found that regardless of the industry, it was incredibly important for employees to feel that they were active participants in the evaluation process. The employees were more likely to feel that the process was fair when supervisors solicited their input prior to an evaluation and used it during the process; when there was two-way communication during the evaluation interview; and when the employees had the chance to challenge or rebut an evaluation. In other words, if the employees were involved in their evaluation, they felt it was fairer. Another study found the same to be true of employees’ perceptions of pay raise decisions.

この広い宇宙には無数の星がある。 きっと地球の様に知的生命体がいる星もあるに違いない。 でも、何で異星人と出会ったという事実が、今になっても証明されていないんだろう。
「みんな、どこにいるの？」

これは昔から何度となく繰り返されて来た疑問で、フェルミ推定 (昔どこかのIT企業の入社試験に採用されて有名になった推論の方法) で有名なフェルミさんがふと口にした「フェルミのパラドックス」だ。 そのなぜなぜに対して49個の思考実験による理由付けと一つの結論が述べられている。これはなかなか面白い。 ユーモアのあるホラ話だったり、ナンチャッテな理由付けも含めて、一つの謎に対して50もの推論を出すというスタンスが科学する心をくすぐる。(邦題「広い宇宙に地球人しか見当たらない50の理由―フェルミのパラドックス」 2002年発刊)

メモポイント

● 解の一つ。「異星人はもうずっと前から地球に住んでおり、ハンガリー人と名乗っている。」 (ロスアラモス研究所にて)
その「異星人」の筆頭と目される人の一人が、その人間離れした知性から、火星人になぞらえる事もあったフォン・ノイマンだ。 現在普及しているコンピュータの原型を作ったり、ナッシュのノーベル経済学賞受賞の元になったゲーム理論を構築したり…
天才と言われるフェルミも写真のような記憶力を持つ「カメラちゃん」のノイマンには敵わなかった。

Easily the most brilliant of the Martians, though, was von Neumann. John von Neumann, whom we shall meet again later in the book, was one of the outstanding mathematicians of the 20th century. He developed the discipline of game theory, made fundamental contributions to quantum theory, ergodic theory, set theory, statistics and numerical analysis, and gained fame when he helped develop the first flexible stored-program digital computer. Toward the end of his career he was a consultant to big business ness and the military, allotting time to various projects as if his brain were a time-share mainframe computer.
His ability to calculate in his head the answers swers to mathematical problems was legendary -he routinely beat Fermi whenever the pair had a calculating contest -and his near-photographic memory just added to an aura of unearthly intelligence.

But the only position that is consistent with the observed absence of extraterrestrials and that at the same time supports my prejudices -the only resolution of the Fermi paradox that makes sense to me -is that we are alone.

結論を読むと、二十億光年分の孤独感が増す。 我々の住む地球はだからこそ、かけがえなく愛おしいものなんだな。どこかで、ネリリし キルルし ハララしていないかなあ。

The Happy Prince (Oscar Wilde) - 「幸福な王子」- 97冊目

オスカー・ワイルドによる童話。街の広場に立つ高価な宝石で飾られた王子の像と、少しツンデレ気味だが心優しいツバメの物語。 実は像には亡くなった王子の心が宿っている。 不幸な人々を見過ごせない王子の魂が残念ながら悲しいラストにつながります。( 1888年発刊)

本作や「泣いた赤鬼」とか僕はこの手の切ない話にホント弱い。涙腺を刺激する。(青鬼よ、君はなんていい奴なんだ) この青鬼とともに、本作のツバメは、僕の「いい奴」ランキングの5本の指に間違いなく入ります。(他は誰かという質問は置いといて)

(以降、ネタバレ注意!)

皮肉屋のワイルドなのでこれは単純な美談ではない。 これだけ街のみんなに尽くしたにも関わらず、王子の像とツバメの死骸はその街の人々自身に壊され、打ち捨てられてしまう。自己犠牲と盲信と身勝手さ。 最期に神が讃えようが何しようが、街の人々が取った仕打ちは変わらない。 「フランダースの犬」もそうだけど、ラストの救いのなさがこの話をより強く印象づけている。 それが逸品として残されてきた理由だと思う。

メモポイント

● ツバメが王子に別れを告げる。 いい奴オーラ満載のシーン。

The poor little Swallow grew colder and colder, but he would not leave the Prince, he loved him too well. He picked up crumbs outside the baker’s door when the baker was not looking and tried to keep himself warm by flapping his wings.
But at last he knew that he was going to die. He had just strength to fly up to the Prince’s shoulder once more. “Good-bye, dear Prince!” he murmured, “will you let me kiss your hand?” “I am glad that you are going to Egypt at last, little Swallow,” said the Prince, “you have stayed too long here; but you must kiss me on the lips, for I love you.”
“It is not to Egypt that I am going,” said the Swallow. “I am going to the House of Death. Death is the brother of Sleep, is he not?”
And he kissed the Happy Prince on the lips, and fell down dead at his feet.
At that moment a curious crack sounded inside the statue, as if something had broken. The fact is that the leaden heart had snapped right in two. It certainly was a dreadfully hard frost.

Early the next morning the Mayor was walking in the square below in company with the Town Councillors. As they passed the column he looked up at the statue: “Dear me! how shabby the Happy Prince looks!” he said.

切ないなー。

Miss Minimalist (Francine Jay) - 96冊目

今は昔。 昭和の懐かしのTVCMに評論家の竹村健一氏が出ていた。 氏はこう語りかける。 「電話の長いヤツ、資料を持ち過ぎのヤツ、この2種類が一番仕事できまへんな。私なんかこれだけですよ。これだけ。」そう言って上着の内ポケットから小さな黒い手帳を取り出してみせる。 必要にして充分な情報はこれに収まっているというのだ。 iPhone はもちろん、シャープのザウルスなどの情報端末が出るよりもずっと前だ。 後にこの「これだけ手帳」は評判になり、氏の監修で販売もされたらしい。(現在は終売だそうですが。)
情報を拡散させずシンプルかつコンパクトにまとめる。 これだけで業務効率が格段に違うのは大いに納得。 このCMは僕の子供心にかなりのインパクトを残し、 その後もシンプルライフやミニマリストの生き方に共感するようになった遠因だったかもしれない。 Francine Jayによる本作もそんな中で手にした本の一冊。(2011年発刊)

メモポイント
● 本作中で著者は「蝶のような軽やかな生き方」を唱えている。以下はその10箇条。 少し禅マインドが入ってるかな。(別作の「The Joy of Less」の方がより詳しいかも)

1. Buy less.
Resolve to purchase only the essentials, and refrain from acquiring new clothes, décor, electronics, and other unnecessary items.

2. Be content with what you have.
To a butterfly, more is only a burden.

3. Act gracefully.
Do what you do, and say what you say, with poise and elegance. Brash language and aggressive attitudes just aren’t cool (or particularly pleasant).

4. Appreciate nature.
Seek entertainment in parks and forests, instead of movie theaters and malls. Enjoy the latest blooms instead of the latest releases.

5. Eat fresh and light.
Like a butterfly, get your nourishment from the natural world—chemical-, preservative-, and hormone-free. Consume only what’s enough, instead of indulging in excess.

6. Preserve the Earth’s resources.
Be a minsumer, and consider the effect of every purchase on the environment. Buy used, buy local, and recycle whenever possible.

7. Inspire others with your actions.
Instead of preaching, let the beauty of your ways be an example to others.

8. Lighten your burden.
Donate your excess to others: Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and local thrift shops can help distribute your castoffs to those who need them most.

9. Live in the moment.
A butterfly doesn’t pine for the past, or fret about the future; rather, every moment is its eternity.

10. Love unconditionally.
Understand that you’re connected to every person, plant, and animal on this planet, and treat them all with love, kindness, and respect.

シンプルな生き方については、かのスティーブ・ジョブズもずっと主張していた。 (52冊目の「Insanely Simple 」でも紹介) 彼の産み出したiPhoneの成功原因の一つに情報の集約化があると思う。 アップルウォッチが今ひとつブレイクしないのは、iPhone との間で情報が拡散するからじゃないかな。 アップル社のガジェット同士の間でデータの同期を取れるにしても、僕にとってはモバイルとして身につける機器は一つで充分だ。 いくら素晴らしいガジェットだったとしても「二つ持ち」は、情報の同期を取りにくくなり、機動性にかけてしまう。 大事なのは、ただ物を少なくすることではなく、アイテム数は少なくとも本当に良いものだけに囲まれて暮らすこと。

シンプルライフに憧れる方には、ビンボーだが精神面がとても豊かな主人公が出てくる前川つかさ氏のマンガ「大東京ビンボー生活マニュアル」がオススメ。

Anne of Green Gables (L. M. Montgomery) - 「赤毛のアン」- 95冊目

   モンゴメリによるこの有名作品、初めて読んだのは実は恥ずかしながら既に成人して会社勤めを始めた頃だ。(村岡花子さんによる邦訳)   そして一気に大ファンになってしまった。     それまでこのジャンルは全く読んだことがなく「こんな少女趣味のお話を大の男が」なんて思ってたんだけど、ふと冷やかしで手に取り読み出したらもう止まらない。   アン・ブックスシリーズ読破、ハマるうちにやがて原書での表現も知りたくなり、僕が英文で本を読むそもそものキッカケとなった本です。(1908年発刊)

  年老いたマシュー・マリラの兄妹が住む「緑色の切妻屋根の家 (Green Gables)」の元に、農作業を手伝うための少年を引き取る予定が手違いで引き取られた孤児院出身の少女アン・シャーリー。(Anneの後ろのeを忘れずに!)  始めは孤児院に送り返されるところだったが、シャイで優しいマシューおじさんと意気投合、少し厳しいが実はユーモアのセンスのあるマリラおばさんとも徐々に心を通わせて、やがて本当の「家族」になっていく。

メモポイント
(好きなシーンが多過ぎて書ききれない…  ネタバレ注意!)

●  両親の外出中に親友ダイアナの妹が瀕死の急病に。 パニックになったダイアナはアンに助けを求めて駆け込んでくる。 アンは冷静に対応、マシューは黙って医者を呼びに行く。言葉を交わさなくても心が通じているシーン。

“He’s gone to harness the sorrel mare to go to Carmody for the doctor,” said Anne, who was hurrying on hood and jacket. “I know it as well as if he’d said so. Matthew and I are such kindred spirits I can read his thoughts without words at all.”

● 年老いたマシュー。だんだん農作業がキツくなってきているのを見てアンが悲しげに言う。「自分が男の子だったら良かったのに」

“If I had been the boy you sent for,” said Anne wistfully. “I’d be able to help you so much now and spare you in a hundred ways. I could find it in my heart to wish I had been, just for that.” “Well now, I’d rather have you than a dozen boys, Anne,” said Matthew patting her hand. “Just mind you that—rather than a dozen boys. Well now, I guess it wasn’t a boy that took the Avery scholarship, was it? It was a girl—my girl—my girl that I’m proud of.”

● 有名なラスト。
道にはいつも曲がり角があり、その向こうには新しい世界が広がっている。「神は天にいまし、すべて世は事もなし」

The joys of sincere work and worthy aspiration and congenial friendship were to be hers; nothing could rob her of her birthright of fancy or her ideal world of dreams. And there was always the bend in the road! “‘God’s in his heaven, all’s right with the world,’” whispered Anne softly.

文句なしのオススメ本!
