うーん、分からない、残念だけど。 読了後に邦訳本の評価感想を見てみましたが、かなりの高評価でしたが、なぜにここまで評価されているのか分かりませんでした。 ストーリーは追いかけられます。が、正直言って何が面白いのか分からなかったのです。 イギリス風の皮肉の効いたユーモアが散りばめられていると書かれた感想もあるので、きっとベースとなる知識が十分にないと楽しめないのかもしれませんね。 話があっちこっちに散逸して、描き出すイメージはとてもサイケデリック。 読者を選ぶ本なんでしょうね。
お話としては単純。宇宙空間において銀河にハイウェイを通す計画があり、その工事のために地球は立ち退き(消滅)の目にあいます。 友人のフォードからこの事実を教えられた地球人アーサーは、地球が破壊される２分前に二人して命からがら脱出、ヒッチハイクした宇宙船に逃げ込みます。 この友人フォード、実はベテルギウス星系惑星で生まれた宇宙人で、「宇宙の歩き方」的なガイド本「銀河ヒッチハイクガイド」の改訂版を作るために地球人を装っていた現地調査員なのでした。 二人は更にその宇宙船からも追い出されたのですが、偶然通りかかったフォードの知り合いで親戚でもある銀河系大統領ザフォドの宇宙船に拾われます。(この肩書きもずいぶん適当みたいですが) 彼らは一緒になり冒険の旅を続けるというドタバタなスラプスティック・ストーリー。

「えー、こちらは宇宙開発局です。ご存知とは思いますが、宇宙航空ハイウェイバイパス建設のため、その軌道ルート上にある地球は撤去されることになりました。地球時間であと2分後に地球を消滅させることになりました。前もってお知らせ致します」
‘This is Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz of the Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council,’ the voice continued. ‘As you will no doubt be aware, the plans for development of the outlying regions of the Galaxy require the building of a hyperspatial express route through your star system, and regrettably your planet is one of those scheduled for demolition. The process will take slightly less than two of your Earth minutes. Thank you.’

これは偉い人あるあるかも。
⚫︎ 実は人間よりもイルカの方が知性が高かった。 地球消滅計画について、何度となくイルカは人間に伝えようとしたのだが、ボールで遊んだりエサを欲しがっていたりしていると誤解されてきた。そしてついにイルカたちは諦めて人間を見放したのだ。「さようなら、今まで魚をありがとう」と。 そして実はそのイルカよりも知性のある生物がいた。それは…実験室で回し車をカラカラと回し続ける小さな生き物だ。
For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much – the wheel, New York, wars and so on – whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man – for precisely the same reasons.
Curiously enough, the dolphins had long known of the impending destruction of the planet Earth and had made many attempts to alert mankind to the danger; but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs or whistle for titbits, so they eventually gave up and left the Earth by their own means shortly before the Vogons arrived.
The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the ‘Star Spangled Banner’, but in fact the message was this: So long, and thanks for all the fish.
In fact there was only one species on the planet more intelligent than dolphins, and they spent a lot of their time in behavioural research laboratories running round inside wheels and conducting frighteningly elegant and subtle experiments on man. The fact that once again man completely misinterpreted this relationship was entirely according to these creatures’ plans.
⚫︎宇宙で二番目に優れたスーパーコンピュータであるディープソート。 750万年をかけて計算し、全ての真実、宇宙の神秘に対する究極の解を示す。その答えとは… えっ、何それ？
禅問答のよう。 ナンセンスな事をさも意味ありげに表現するエセ知識人を揶揄しているのかもしれない。
この会話のキャッチボール、盛り上げ方は上手い。
The two men shivered with expectancy. Their waiting had not been in vain.
‘There really is one?’ breathed Phouchg.
‘There really is one,’ confirmed Deep Thought.
‘To Everything? To the great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything?’
‘Yes.’
Both of the men had been trained for this moment, their lives had been a preparation for it, they had been selected at birth as those who would witness the answer, but even so they found themselves gasping and squirming like excited children.
‘And you’re ready to give it to us?’ urged Loonquawl.
‘I am.’
‘Now?’
‘Now,’ said Deep Thought.
They both licked their dry lips.
‘Though I don’t think,’ added Deep Thought, ‘that you’re going to like it.’
‘Doesn’t matter,’ said Phouchg. ‘We must know it! Now!’
‘Now?’ enquired Deep Thought.
‘Yes! Now…’
‘All right,’ said the computer and settled into silence again. The two men fidgeted. The tension was unbearable.
‘You’re really not going to like it,’ observed Deep Thought.
‘Tell us!’ ‘All right,’ said Deep Thought.
‘The Answer to the Great Question…’
‘Yes…!’
‘Of Life, the Universe and Everything…’ said Deep Thought.
‘Yes…!’
‘Is…’ said Deep Thought, and paused.
‘Yes…!’
‘Is…’
‘Yes …!!! …?’ ‘Forty-two,’ said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.
みんなが面白いというから、きっと面白いのだろうと思おうとしても、うーん。「ふるやのもり」みたいな感じでした…
でもこの唐突に終わる感じは、ヒッチコックの映画みたいで好みですね。前のページまで読んでいてもこんなにすぐに終わりになるのかと予測できませんでした。
