私の長女はかなりの読書家で私の読書の師匠筋にあたります。 で、彼女が読んで面白かった本を定期的に私に勧めてくれるのですが、何せスゴいスピードで読んでおり(いつもカバンにパンパンに本を詰めていてその重さでヨロヨロしながら歩いている)、みるみるうちに彼女からのオススメ本・目ウロコ本のバックログが私のKindleに溜まってきています。バーチャル積読状態です。
さて、今回もかなり以前に薦めてくれたバックログからの一冊です。そしてこれがかなり面白かった。私の苦手なハード系SFかと思っていましたがとても読みやすい。漱石の「夢十夜」のようでもあり、藤子・F・不二雄先生言うところの「SF(少し不思議)」的な奇妙な後味のする作品でした。

⚫︎ 第一話: アラビアンナイトのよう、塞翁が馬な話。事実は変えられないが、解釈が変わることもある。 甘酸っぱい話で全9話の中で一番のお気に入り。 ちょっとBTTFな感じ。

Ted Chiang の作品に良くみられる考え方なのかな。 タイムマシンがあったとしても運命は変えられない。しかしどのように解釈するのかは変えることができる。
⚫︎ 第二話: 息吹。 フィリングスタンド(空気のガソリンスタンドのようなところ)で、新鮮な空気を補充する。ミクロの決死圏的。宇宙全体が生き物のように呼吸をしているというお話。 エントロピー増大を経て、その呼吸が止まる時…
⚫︎ 第三話: 全てのことを預言されてしまうようになると、生きる価値を見出せなくなるものなのか。
⚫︎ 第四話: ソフトウェアの開発と興亡。これらの作品群の中で一番リアルに感じた。 ビジネス構造の限界か。SFだけど既存ビジネスが時代についていけなくなる描写がうまい。たまごっちを思い出した。 バーチャルペットと親が感じる子育ての悩みがリンクする。また高度に進化したラブドールの扱いにも繋がる。愛する子供を育てるために苦海に身を沈める母親の姿が重なる。
“No,” says Jax. He stops and walks back to her avatar. “Don’t want play.”
“What? Sure you do.”
“No playing. Want job.”
Ana laughs. “What? Why do you want to get a job?”
“Get money.”
She realizes that Jax isn’t happy when he says this; his mood is glum. More seriously, she asks him, “What do you need money for?”
“Don’t need. Give you.”
“Why do you want to give me money?”
“You need,” he says, matter-of-factly.
“Did I say I need money? When?”
“Last week ask why you play with other digients instead me. You said people pay you play with them. If have money, can pay you. Then you play with me more.”
“Oh, Jax.” She’s momentarily at a loss for words. “That’s very sweet of you.”

After another year has gone by, it becomes official: Blue Gamma is shutting down its operations. Not enough customers were willing to take a chance on the perpetually docile digients. Internally there were many proposals discussed, including a breed of digient that understands language but can’t speak, but it was too late. The customer base has stabilized to a small community of hard-core digient owners, and they don’t generate enough revenue to keep Blue Gamma afloat. The company will release a no-fee version of the food-dispensing software so those who want to can keep their digients running as long as they like, but otherwise, the customers are on their own.
⚫︎ 第五話: 自動ナニー。なんかメトロポリスか学天即のイメージ。マッドサイエンティスト。 タッチが星新一のショートショートを思い出させる。
⚫︎ 第六話: 記憶と記録の物語。記憶は本人の都合の良いように書き換えられる。事実を明るみにすることは全てを幸せにするとは限らない。 少し切なく、少し残酷。
And I think I’ve found the real benefit of digital memory. The point is not to prove you were right; the point is to admit you were wrong.
確かにそう思う。自分の古い日記を読んでみると、こんな事を考えていたのかと驚く事がある。都合良く記憶を変えてしまっている。しかし、忘却は救いでもあるのだろう。全て鮮明に記憶しているのは余りにも辛い。
⚫︎ 第七話: 異常に知能の発達したオウムの独白。 荒唐無稽な話なんだけど、ラストにグッときた。愛に溢れている。
⚫︎ 第八話: 進化論をぶっ飛ばせ! ラッセルの世界五分前仮説を思い出す。キリスト教による創造主が人間を作りたもうた理論がベースとなるパラレルワールド。その主人公は我々では無かったんだと言うお話。
So I will return to the Arisona dig, Lord, whether it is under your watchful eye or not. Even if humanity is not the reason for which the universe was made, I still wish to understand the way it operates. We human beings may not be the answer to the question why, but I will keep looking for the answer to how.

⚫︎ 第九話: パラレルワールドの自分との接触。プリズムの説明はSF過ぎて、一体何を言ってるんだか… 分かんなくても物語は楽しめる？ ifの世界があり個別の事象や体験は分岐したとしても、その人の本質は変えられない、そして歴史は変わらない。 そして人は脆い生き物であり少しだけの希望を持てる生き物であるということ。
“And I keep thinking, if I hadn’t said the pills were mine, everything would be different. If I had let Vinessa take her share of the blame, there wouldn’t have been that wedge to drive us apart. We would have been in it together, she wouldn’t have started hanging out with those troubled girls, and her life would have gone in a completely different direction.”
If の世界でストーリーが分岐しても、人間の本質は、そして物事の最終的な変わらないのだ

最初と最後のエピソードが切なさのテイストが自分の好みにマッチして印象に残りました。 この間、映画「メッセージ」を観たのですが、原作がTed Chiang の「あなたの人生の物語」だとの事。 とても良かったので原作にもチャレンジしたいと思ってます。
